The College of Medicine, through the Department of Studies and Planning, organized a workshop titled “Fighting Social Stigma: Changing Attitudes and Supporting Addiction Recovery.” This workshop was part of a series of activities aimed at raising social awareness and promoting social solidarity.

The session was led by Professor Dr. Rana Hussein Rahima, who addressed the concept of social stigma, its psychological and social effects, the underlying causes leading to stigma, and effective strategies to combat it. The workshop presented practical approaches for reducing stigma, emphasizing the role of educational institutions in raising students’ awareness of the importance of tolerance, understanding, and respecting diversity and individual differences.

Additionally, the discussion highlighted the role of media and modern technology in spreading awareness and reducing the impact of social stigma.

The workshop aimed to create an academically and socially supportive environment for combating social stigma—not only as a step toward assisting individuals in addiction recovery but also as a step toward building a more humane and understanding society.
