Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Wasit University honours a sixth-year student in recognition of his discovery of a scientific error in a recognised international source
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Wasit University, Assistant Professor Dr Nasir Kazim al-Maliki, honoured sixth-year student Mohammed Sabah Kazim Hamid in recognition of his scientific efforts and academic excellence after he discovered a scientific error in one of the internationally recognised sources included in the curriculum for the Obstetrics and Gynaecology module
Student Mohammed Sabah Kazim identified an error concerning the mechanism of action of duloxetine, a drug used to treat stress urinary incontinence in women, as described in the book Gynaecology by Ten Teachers, 21st edition, which is one of the sources approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for the Gynaecology and Obstetrics syllabus
After the student contacted the publisher and the authors of the book, they officially confirmed the inaccuracy in the information contained therein, noting that it would be corrected and amended in the next edition of the book
This marks the second achievement for student Mohammed Sabah Kazim Hamid within a four-month period; he had previously identified another scientific error in one of the approved sources. He has thus contributed to the identification of two scientific errors in two different sources within a short period of time – an achievement that reflects his scientific rigour, his meticulousness in reviewing sources, and his capacity for scientific analysis and critique.
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Assistant Professor Dr Nasir Kazim al-Maliki, praised this outstanding scientific achievement, emphasising that such initiatives reflect the advanced academic standard of the faculty’s students and encourage the adoption of a scientific approach to research and verification, rather than simply accepting information from sources without scrutiny and review.
This honour is in recognition of the student’s excellence.
