Under the patronage of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Nasir Kazim Jawad Al-Maliki,
the Faculty of Medicine held an educational workshop on Sunday, 28 December, entitled:
‘Rabies: Scientific Facts and Social Responsibility’ presented by Prof. Taqi Muhammad Jawad Tahir, Head of the Family and Community Medicine Department, and Prof. Zainab Abbas Hassouni, Head of the Pathology and Forensic Medicine Department
This was done in the context of promoting health awareness and highlighting one of the most dangerous viral diseases common to humans and animals, and the health and environmental challenges posed by stray dogs, which require integrated scientific solutions.
The workshop covered several topics, most notably: Definition of rabies, its spread and modes of transmission • Clinical symptoms in humans and animals • Incubation period and severity of the disease after the onset of symptoms • Basics of prevention and preventive intervention after exposure.
The workshop concluded that there is a need to raise health and community awareness of evidence-based preventive practices. The best option is a comprehensive scientific solution that includes
vaccinating stray dogs
and sterilising them to limit reproduction,
in addition to medical treatment of serious cases and rapid administration of the necessary vaccines and treatments
