on Monday, 7 September 2026, in the presence of the examination committee comprising Professor Rana Hussein Rahima as chair, Professor Jassim Hussein Makhramsh as a member, Professor Zina Mohammed Abdul-Hussein as a member, Assistant Professor Salim Rahif Aryan Al-Aidi as a member and supervisor, and Assistant Professor Dr Nasir Kazim Jawad al-Maliki as a member and supervisor
The thesis examined Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria isolated from burn injuries at two burn centres through the analysis of clinical and environmental samples using culture methods, the VITEK® 2 system, molecular confirmation and the detection of virulence genes, as well as the assessment of antibiotic resistance, biofilm formation and molecular typing using ERIC-PCR technology
The study results showed that the isolates possessed high levels of antibiotic resistance, extending to the extensively drug-resistant (XDR) pattern, with a high capacity for biofilm formation, whilst molecular typing revealed the presence of a predominant endemic strain and phylogenetic relationships between clinical and environmental isolates, indicating the potential for intra-hospital transmission
The study emphasised the importance of adopting molecular surveillance and strengthening infection control measures to limit the spread of antibiotic-resistant isolates in burns units.
At the conclusion of the discussion, the committee acknowledged the student’s success and awarded him a First Class Honours degree in recognition of his scientific endeavour and the significant findings of his thesis.
