The Faculty of Medicine at Wasit University examines a Master’s thesis on inflammatory markers and adipocytokines in patients with metabolic syndrome
The Faculty of Medicine at Wasit University examined the Master’s thesis by student Yasser Mohammed Ghazi, entitled
Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines Expression (IL-6 and TNF-α), Adipocytokine Ratio (Leptin/Adiponectin) and CRP in Metabolic Syndrome
on Sunday 13 September 2026, in the presence of the examination committee comprising Professor Dr Wasna Jumaa Mohammed (Chair), Professor Dr Hussein Adnan Mohammed (member), Assistant Professor Dr Salim Rahif Aryan Al-Aidi (member) and Assistant Professor Dr Mohammed Ali Salman Al-Kaabi (member and supervisor)
The thesis examined a number of biomarkers in patients with metabolic syndrome by analysing blood samples from both patients and healthy individuals to investigate the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines, using Real-Time PCR to measure gene expression levels, as well as measuring leptin and adiponectin levels using the ELISA technique
The results of the study showed a clear increase in leptin levels, the leptin-to-adiponectin ratio and C-reactive protein, as well as elevated gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients with metabolic syndrome compared to healthy individuals, whilst adiponectin levels were found to be significantly lower
The results also demonstrated that these markers possess high diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing between patients and healthy individuals, supporting their potential use as biomarkers for chronic inflammation and an increased risk of heart disease associated with metabolic syndrome
At the conclusion of the discussion, the committee acknowledged the student’s success and awarded him a First Class Honours degree in recognition of his academic efforts and the thesis’s significant findings in the field of early diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and the prevention of its cardiac complications and
