The Faculty of Medicine at Wasit University discusses a Master’s thesis on immune markers and cytokines in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis during the various stages of treatment
The Faculty of Medicine at Wasit University examined the Master’s thesis submitted by student Abbas Mohammed Jubair, entitled:
“CD4, CD8, CD56, CD19 and IL-2, IL-6, QuantiFERON for TB Patients”
The defence took place on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, in the presence of the examination committee comprising Professor Adnan Hamad Obaid (Chair), Assistant Professor Dr Mohammed Ali Salman Al-Kaabi (member), Assistant Professor Dr Hassan Akrim Adbis (member) and Assistant Professor Dr Haitham Qasim Mohammed (member and supervisor).
The study aimed to evaluate immunological changes in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis during the stages of treatment by examining CD4, CD8, CD19 and CD56 markers, as well as the cytokines IL-2 and IL-6, in addition to the QuantiFERON test.
The study included 160 participants divided into four groups of 40 participants each, and the tests were carried out using flow cytometry and ELISA techniques.
The results revealed significant changes in a number of immune markers during the treatment phases; CD4, CD19 and QuantiFERON levels increased after two months of treatment, whilst IL-6 demonstrated the best diagnostic performance among the markers studied.
This study forms part of scientific research that contributes to a better understanding of the immune changes associated with pulmonary tuberculosis during the stages of treatment and supports the laboratory markers used in patient monitoring.
