The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Wasit examines a Master’s thesis on multi-locus genetic typing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Wasit Governorate
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Wasit examined the Master’s thesis submitted by student Hassan Abdul-Amir Kabash, entitled:
“Multi-Locus Sequence Typing of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Clinical Isolates from Iraqi Patients in Wasit Province”
The study aimed to identify Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from clinical samples, assess their patterns of antibiotic resistance, and analyse the genetic diversity of the isolates using multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), with the aim of tracking bacterial strains and understanding their genetic characteristics in Wasit Governorate.
The study included 120 clinical samples, and the results showed that 30 Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were identified, representing an isolation rate of 25 per cent. The results also revealed high rates of resistance to certain antibiotics, whilst meropenem showed the highest susceptibility rate among the antibiotics tested. The study also revealed significant genetic diversity among the isolates and the absence of a predominant genetic pattern, as well as the registration of the genetic sequences of five Iraqi isolates in the NCBI GenBank database, representing a new scientific contribution to global genetic data.
The examination committee consisted of Professor Lamis Abdul-Razzaq Abdul-Latif as chair, Professor Jassim Hussein Makhramsh as a member, Assistant Professor Hassan Akrim Idbis as a member, and Professor Rana Hussein Rahima as a member and supervisor.
At the conclusion of the defence, the thesis was approved after meeting all scientific and academic requirements, with the committee commending the scientific effort expended and the study’s findings, which contribute to supporting medical research and enhancing knowledge regarding genetic diversity and antibiotic resistance
