With great sadness and sorrow, Wasit University held a solemn memorial council today, Monday, 21/7/2025, for the souls of the martyrs of the tragic Kut tragedy, in the hall of Dr Atta Kati, College of Medicine, in the presence of the President of the University, Prof. Dr Abbas Lifta Al-Aqabi, the assistants, the Dean of the College of Medicine, Assistant Professor Dr Naseer Kazim Al-Maliki, and the administrative assistant, Assistant Professor Dr Salem Rahif Al-Ayedi.

The council began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran and the reading of Surat Al-Fatiha in memory of the victims, then the President of the University delivered a moving speech in which he expressed his deep sorrow and pain for the great loss that shook the conscience of society, stressing that what happened is a deep wound in the heart of every Iraqi and that the university stands with all its components alongside the families of the victims and perpetuates their memory with prayers and loyalty

The Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr Naseer Kazim Al-Maliki, delivered a eulogy in which he expressed the depth of the tragedy that affected the families of the city and claimed the lives of innocent people who carried simple dreams and great ambitions, pointing out that this incident represents a sad chapter in the history of Kut that requires solidarity for accountability and justice.

Dr Salem Rahif Al-Ayedi, Administrative Assistant, expressed in a moving speech the extent of the pain experienced by the academic, professional and student community, stressing that this loss is not individual but touches the conscience of all the country’s sons. He also made a proposal to turn the site of the tragedy into a symbolic landmark where the victims will be remembered annually, and serve as a living witness to pain and loyalty, and a painful memory that unites hearts and calls for awareness and peace.

The council concluded with a collective prayer for the victims, asking God to have mercy on them and to grant them eternal rest, amid an atmosphere dominated by feelings of grief, solidarity and prayer, and a general invitation to all who wished to participate in the moment of death.
