From medical student to entrepreneur
The Faculty of Medicine organised a scientific lecture entitled ‘Medical Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Health Sector,’ presented by Dr. Tayf Karim Al-Qaisi, Head of the Sustainable Development Unit. The lecture addressed the recent shift in medical practice from its traditional therapeutic framework to innovative entrepreneurial projects with sustainable health and economic impacts. The lecture was attended by the Administrative Assistant of the Faculty of Medicine, Assistant Professor Dr. Salim Rahif Al-Aidi.
The lecture highlighted the importance of medical entrepreneurship in addressing current challenges, including the increase in chronic diseases, the complexity of patient needs, the high number of medical school graduates versus limited employment opportunities, as well as the clear shortage of some health services, especially in remote and specialised areas.
The lecture emphasised that medical entrepreneurship starts with diagnosing health problems and gaps in care delivery, leading to the creation of practical, applicable solutions that contribute to improving the quality of health services, creating new job opportunities, and supporting the local economy.
It also showed that innovation does not mean complexity, but rather simplifying procedures and organising healthcare work using smart methods, such as improving patient flow and employing digital technologies, thereby reducing pressure on healthcare institutions and increasing performance efficiency.
The lecture highlighted the pivotal role of medical students as the ones closest to the suffering of patients and best able to diagnose flaws in the healthcare system, calling on them to embrace entrepreneurial thinking and contribute to building future healthcare systems based on innovation and positive change.
The lecture included a review of successful global models in the field of medical entrepreneurship and concluded by emphasising that medical entrepreneurship is an effective tool for improving community health and achieving sustainable economic development, in line with the sustainable development goals of
