The Faculty of Medicine examined the Master’s thesis entitled “Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Bacterial Isolates from Patients with Impetigo Infections in Wasit Province”, submitted by the student Ahmed Qandil Hajim within the field of medical microbiology, in the presence of distinguished scientific and academic figures
The study aimed to isolate and identify the bacterial species causing impetigo infections, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, using both conventional methods and molecular techniques based on the 16S rRNA gene, as well as to evaluate the efficacy of certain antibiotics and to study the effect of various probiotics, comparing them with antibiotics using modern laboratory methods to detect antibacterial activity
The study also investigated a number of important virulence genes and factors using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, given their role in determining the pathogenic characteristics of the bacteria causing the infection and enhancing the accuracy of laboratory diagnosis
The thesis recommended the need to promote health awareness and adherence to personal hygiene, and to limit the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, whilst emphasising the importance of performing bacterial cultures prior to selecting treatment and conducting broader future studies on probiotics and virulence factors
The examination committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Abdullah Abis Mansour as chair, Prof. Dr. Jassim Hussein Makhramsh as member and supervisor, Prof. Dr. Azhar Jabbar Khalaf as member, and Prof. Dr. Rana Hussein Rahima as member
At the conclusion of the discussion, the thesis was awarded a distinction in recognition of the outstanding scientific efforts contained in the study and its importance in supporting medical research and advancing the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of bacterial skin diseases
